Summer Memories Deserve More Than a Camera Roll: Why Summer Photos Matter in Lawrence, KS
Summer in Lawrence always seems to fly by.
One minute school is letting out, the pools are opening, and everyone is making vacation plans. The next minute the stores are filled with school supplies and you're wondering where the season went.
While spring and fall are personally my favorite seasons for portrait sessions, there is something special about summer that deserves to be remembered. Summer isn't necessarily about perfect weather or perfect portraits. It's about experiences, adventures, and the memories we make along the way.
Summer Isn't My Favorite Portrait Season, And That's Okay
If you've read my blog about Spring versus Fall Portraits, you already know those are my favorite seasons for traditional portrait sessions. As a photographer, I can't help but get excited about spring blooms and soft pastel colors or the rich oranges, reds, and cozy sweater-weather vibes that fall brings, but that doesn't mean summer should be overlooked.
Summer may not always provide the easiest conditions for portraits. Kansas heat, humidity, and bright sunlight can definitely make photographers work a little harder. Hair gets frizzy, kids get sweaty, and sometimes everyone is counting down the minutes until the air conditioning kicks back in, but what summer does offer is something completely different: experiences.
Summer is often when families take vacations, kids spend every day outdoors, friends gather around bonfires, and couples make memories they'll talk about for years. These moments may not happen in perfect weather, but they're often some of the most meaningful moments of the year.
Summer Is About Making Memories
When I think about summer, I don't immediately think about photography.
I think about staying outside later than usual because the sun hasn't gone down yet. I think about family vacations, cookouts, ice cream runs, lake days, and kids who somehow manage to come home dirty every single evening.
Summer feels different.
Life slows down just enough for people to spend time together. Schedules become a little more flexible. Families reconnect. Friends gather. Adventures happen.
Those are the moments worth preserving.
Professional Photos Capture More Than What Happened
Let's be honest, most of us take hundreds, if not thousands, of photos on our phones throughout the summer. The problem is that those photos often stay buried in a camera roll. Professional photography captures more than just what happened. It captures how it felt.
Years from now, you'll remember the laughter, the adventure, and the people who shared those moments with you. A professional photograph helps bring those memories back to life in a way that scrolling through a phone often doesn't.
Summer Sessions Feel Natural and Authentic
Rather than focusing on perfectly posed portraits, summer sessions often focus on documenting real life as it happens. Bare feet in the grass. Evenings at Clinton Lake. Chasing kids through a park. Grabbing ice cream downtown. Watching the sunset together on a warm Kansas evening.
Some of my favorite summer moments to photograph include:
Families spending quality time together
Kids laughing and playing outdoors
Couples taking evening walks
Lake adventures and sunset sessions
Anniversary celebrations
Maternity sessions during golden hour
Friends making memories together
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is preserving the people, relationships, and moments that make this season meaningful.
Beautiful Summer Photo Locations Around Lawrence
One of the things I love about photographing in Lawrence is the variety of beautiful locations available during the summer months.
Some favorite spots include:
Clinton Lake
Downtown Lawrence
South Park
The University of Kansas campus
Local nature trails
Open fields and wildflower areas
Historic neighborhoods filled with mature trees
The key is choosing the right time of day. Summer sunsets provide some of the most beautiful light of the year, and scheduling sessions during the cooler parts of the day helps everyone stay comfortable.
Don't Let Summer Slip Away
The beauty of summer photography isn't that it's the "best" season, its:
That summer memories tend to disappear quickly.
The family vacation you've been planning for months. The season your children seemed to grow overnight. The evenings spent together before school, sports, and busy schedules return.
Those moments may feel ordinary today, but years from now they'll become some of your most treasured memories.
They deserve more than a forgotten spot in your camera roll.
They deserve to be remembered.
