The Great Debate: Spring vs. Fall Portrait Sessions
As a photographer, one of the questions I hear every year is, "Should we schedule our portraits in the spring or the fall?"
The answer? It depends on what you're looking for. Both seasons create beautiful images, and honestly, I get excited for both in completely different ways.
While every season has its place, if I had to choose between spring and fall, I'd happily photograph in either one all day long. Summer and winter can certainly produce beautiful images too, but they often come with challenges that make sessions less comfortable and less predictable.
So let's dive into The Great Debate.
Team Spring: Fresh Starts and New Beginnings
There is something magical about spring that I absolutely love.
After months of bare trees and muted landscapes, everything suddenly starts waking up again. Flowers begin to bloom, the grass turns green, and it feels like new life is in the air. There's an energy to spring that you can almost feel.
One of my favorite things about spring portraits is the color palette. Soft pinks, light purples, creamy whites, and fresh greens seem to be everywhere. Those pastel colors create such a dreamy, romantic feel that photographs beautifully.
Spring sessions are perfect for:
Families wanting bright, cheerful images
Couples looking for a romantic backdrop
Maternity sessions celebrating new beginnings
Seniors who love light and airy photos
Of course, spring isn't perfect. We occasionally have to work around rain showers, muddy fields, and unpredictable weather. But for me, the blooming flowers and fresh colors are worth the gamble.
There is just something special about standing in a field full of blossoms and feeling like the world is starting over again.
Team Fall: Cozy, Rich, and Timeless
Then there's fall.
The moment those first cool breezes arrive, I find myself reaching for sweaters and getting excited about portrait season.
Fall has a completely different feeling than spring. Instead of soft and airy, it's warm and rich. The oranges, reds, yellows, and golden tones create stunning natural backdrops that feel cozy and timeless.
One of my favorite parts of fall sessions is that little hint of crispness in the air. It's not cold yet, but you can feel winter slowly making its way closer. The changing leaves, the smell of autumn, and the return of sweater weather make everything feel incredibly inviting.
Fall portraits are perfect for:
Families wanting warm, cozy images
Couples who love rich colors
Holiday card photos
Seniors looking for dramatic scenery
The biggest challenge with fall is that everyone loves it. Fall dates tend to book quickly because those beautiful leaves only stick around for a short window before nature decides it's time to move on.
Summer Isn't My First Choice
Summer can absolutely produce beautiful photos, but it isn't usually my favorite season for portrait sessions.
The biggest reason? Heat.
When temperatures climb into the 90s, nobody is having their best time. Hair starts sticking to faces, makeup begins to struggle, and little kids often decide they've had enough long before we're finished.
The sun is also much harsher during the summer months, which means we have a smaller window of ideal lighting. Most summer sessions need to happen close to sunrise or sunset to avoid squinting and harsh shadows.
Can we make summer work? Absolutely.
Is it usually as comfortable as spring or fall? Not quite.
Winter Can Be Tough
Winter has its own kind of beauty, especially when snow decides to cooperate.
But here in Kansas, winter often means cold temperatures, bare trees, and unpredictable weather. It's difficult to convince anyone they're having fun when they can't feel their fingers.
The shorter days also limit scheduling options, and let's be honest—most people don't dream about standing outside in freezing temperatures for family photos.
That said, if you love dramatic winter scenery or snowy landscapes, winter can create some truly unique portraits.
So Which Season Wins?
The truth is, I can't pick a winner.
Spring feels hopeful, fresh, and full of possibility. The blooms, pastel colors, and sense of renewal make every session feel vibrant and alive.
Fall feels cozy, nostalgic, and rich with color. The warm tones, crisp air, and sweater-weather vibes create images that never seem to go out of style.
If you're drawn to soft colors and blooming landscapes, spring might be your perfect season.
If you love rich colors, cozy outfits, and autumn leaves, fall may have your heart.
As for me? I'll happily photograph either one. Give me a field of spring blossoms or a tree-lined path covered in fiery autumn leaves, and I'm one happy photographer.
Now it's your turn. Are you Team Spring or Team Fall? I'd love to hear which season wins The Great Debate for you.
