Why Spring Is a Beautiful Time for Portraits in Lawrence, KS

If you've read my blog about spring versus fall portraits, you already know that choosing a favorite season isn't easy for me. As a photographer, I can't help but get excited about spring blooms, soft pastel colors, and the feeling that everything is coming back to life after a long Kansas winter. At the same time, I love the rich colors and cozy atmosphere that fall brings.

Every season has something unique to offer. In fact, I recently wrote about why summer memories are worth documenting, even though summer isn't my favorite season for portraits. But there is something especially refreshing about spring that makes it one of my favorite times to photograph families.

After months of cold weather and spending more time indoors, spring gives everyone a reason to get outside again. Trees begin to bloom, flowers start appearing everywhere, and families are finally able to enjoy the fresh air without worrying about freezing temperatures or summer heat.

For family photography, that's a pretty great combination.

The Best Photos Aren't About Perfect Poses

When people start looking for a photographer, many of them think they're searching for someone who can get everyone to smile at the camera at the exact same moment. While we'll definitely capture a few of those traditional portraits, they're usually not the images families treasure most years later.

The photographs that tend to become favorites are the ones that feel real. They're the images of your child laughing at something silly. The way your favorite person reaches for your hand without thinking about it. The look your spouse gives the kids when they're busy playing and don't realize anyone is watching.

Those little moments tell your story far better than any perfectly posed photograph ever could. That's why my approach to photography focuses on connection first and posing second. I'll guide you throughout the session, but I also leave room for genuine interaction because that's where the magic usually happens.

Why Spring Works So Well for Family Sessions

One of the reasons I love spring sessions is that the season naturally creates a beautiful environment without feeling overwhelming. Fresh greenery begins to appear, flowering trees create gorgeous backdrops, and the softer color palette complements family portraits beautifully. Spring also tends to offer comfortable temperatures, which means anyone can run, play, and explore without getting too hot or too cold. The result is often a more relaxed session where everyone can simply enjoy spending time together.

Some of my favorite spring locations around Lawrence include local parks, tree-lined trails, open green spaces, and areas with seasonal blooms. The exact location matters less than how it makes your family feel. When everyone is comfortable and having fun, the photos naturally reflect that.

A Little Secret About Kids

One of the biggest concerns parents have before a session is whether their children will cooperate. The truth is, I don't expect perfection. Some of the best photographs happen when kids are simply being themselves; laughing, exploring, playing, and interacting naturally with the people they love most.

What to Wear for Spring Family Photos

I’ll keep this one short and sweet here because I have a whole other blog about it: What To Wear - Family covers all kinds of clothing options for each member of the family, it covers patterns and textures. Check it out!

When Should You Book a Spring Session?

Spring is one of those seasons that seems to arrive overnight and disappear just as quickly. If you're hoping to capture blooming trees, fresh greenery, and all the beauty that spring brings, it's best to plan ahead.

But don't wait for the "perfect" time. Family photos are about preserving memories, not perfection.

The season you're living in right now is worth remembering.
