What to Expect at Your Child's Milestone or Cake Smash Session
Every stage of your little one's early years is worth celebrating. Whether your child is sitting independently, crawling, taking their first steps, celebrating a birthday, or simply reaching another exciting milestone, these sessions are designed to capture their personality in a fun, relaxed way.
These sessions are not just for first birthdays. I have photographed children celebrating milestones and birthdays through age three, and every session is unique.
After photographing hundreds of little ones over the years, one thing has become very clear. No two children are alike. Some are outgoing, some are shy, some love the cake, and some want nothing to do with it. However your child shows up that day, we'll embrace it. My goal is to create a fun, low pressure experience where your child can simply be themselves.
Before we dive into what to expect, it is helpful to know that not every package includes a cake. Some milestone and birthday packages include a professionally made cake, while others allow families to bring their own. If your package includes a cake, I will take care of coordinating it. If not, I am happy to recommend the size and style that photograph best.
How Your Session Flows
Every session is designed to move at your child's pace. Most follow this simple three part flow.
Part One: Warm Up Portraits
We spend the first 15 to 20 minutes helping your child get comfortable in the studio.
If your package includes family portraits, we usually begin there. Starting with mom, dad, or siblings often helps little ones relax before moving into individual portraits.
If your package is just for your child, we'll ease into the session through play. Balloons, bubbles, beads, and other simple props help capture natural smiles while your little one gets comfortable with me and the camera.
If you brought two outfits, we'll photograph the first outfit now before changing into the cake smash outfit.
Part Two: The Cake Smash
Once your child is comfortable, it's time for the cake.
Surprisingly, this is usually the shortest part of the session. Many children have never had an entire cake placed in front of them, so they often aren't sure what to do. Some dig right in, some cautiously taste a bite, and some decide the cake is not for them. Every reaction makes for authentic, memorable photos.
I always provide a small plastic fork or knife so you can offer tiny bites if your child needs a little encouragement.
Pro Tip: If you're comfortable with it, let your child try a cupcake a few days before your session. Becoming familiar with cake ahead of time often helps them feel more comfortable during the session.
Part Three: Bath Splash (Optional)
If you've chosen to add a bath splash, we'll finish with a warm bath.
For many little ones, this ends up being the favorite part of the day. They get to splash, play, and clean off the frosting while I capture those sweet, joyful moments.
If you'd rather skip the bath, that's perfectly fine. We'll simply end the session after the cake, and I always have wipes available for cleanup.
Tips For A Great Session
Follow Your Child's Lead
These sessions are meant to be fun, not rushed. We'll take breaks whenever your child needs them.
Feel free to bring:
Favorite snacks
Water, bottle, or sippy cup
Pacifier, if they use one
A favorite toy or comfort item
If your child needs to nurse, my studio is private, and I am happy to step out of the room.
One Voice Is Better Than Five
Too many people calling your child's name can quickly become overwhelming.
If both parents attend, I recommend one person helping with your child while the other is the official smile maker. If you're attending alone, we'll work together as a team.
I will gently guide the session, but I leave most of the handling to parents since many little ones are more comfortable with familiar faces.
What Should You Bring?

A Few Final Reminders
If you're bringing your own cake, pick it up as close to your session as possible so it stays fresh.
If your child has food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
Most importantly, come ready to have fun. There is no perfect way to do a milestone or cake smash session. The best photographs come from genuine smiles, curious expressions, messy fingers, and little personalities shining through.
Thank you for trusting me with these memories. I cannot wait to celebrate this special season with your family!
